This is because my grandmother is a devoted buddhist, and at an young age, I have been subjected to Catholic Kindergarden, where we prayed every time we do something. I thought Religion was not so important, until I saw the world, with conflicts because of religion. Then, i changed my views that religion does influence us, yet it should not influence us to the point that we kill each other. It should only be in our minds. I just think religion is something one thinks, without too much of an influence on my life.
Confucianism in everyday life:
This part of the movie, Moby Dick, shows friend vs friend relationship, based on reciprocity, one of major confucian principles.
Confucius says, "Ts'an (another name for disciple Tseng Tzu), there is one thread that runs through my doctrines. (4:15, translation from Sources of Chinese Tradition)", according to "Confucius says..." section of Confucianism wikipage. Confucius believed that reciprocity was the one thread, as also mentioned by Tseng Tzu. This shows the importance of the reciprocity, and how we should do to others what we want them to do to us. The excerpt of Moby Dick emphasizes the increasing friendship and tension between the two news reporters. As they wait for their subject, they feel the need to be closer to each other, and be of more help. They develop into friends, as they require each others' sources and informations about the upcoming breaking news topic. The fact that the reporters needing to get closer to each other personally, in order to achieve their goals at work, hits our head with confucianism. Western mind believe in private space, home sweet home, my own business. Yet, asian societies, in this case Korean, believe in some sort of personal sharing—piety—that needs to be achieved in order to reach into the deeper realms.
